First Timer's Guide to the Science Olympiad for Kids
Posted on August 5, 2024
Is your child excited about science and participating in their first National Level Science Olympiad (NLSO)? That's fantastic! This guide is for kids (and their parents) who are new to the experience. We'll walk you through what to expect and how to prepare so you can have a fun and successful time.
What is the Science Olympiad?
The Science Olympiad is a multiple-choice question exam that tests how well you understand science concepts. It's not just about memorizing facts from your textbook. The questions will make you think about how science works in the world around you. For younger kids (Classes 1-5), this is often called Environmental Science (EVS) and covers topics about plants, animals, our body, and the environment.
How to Prepare and Have Fun
The best way to prepare is to be curious! Pay attention in your science class at school. Look at the sample papers on the NTC website to see what the questions look like. Try some fun science experiments at home (with a parent's help!) to see science in action. For example, watch a plant grow from a seed, or mix baking soda and vinegar to see a chemical reaction.
The most important thing is to have fun with science. The more you explore, the more you'll learn.
On exam day, remember to read each question carefully. Don't worry if you don't know the answer to a question. Just do your best on the ones you do know. Every participant is a winner because you were brave enough to try something new!
